We are super excited to announce a new regular column—you may recall just a few short months ago (or was it years ago?) we featured the wonderfully talented Rebecca Aronson (April 2020). She is not only a talented poet but she has been running the coolest literary event in Albuquerque, Bad Mouth, featuring all genre of writers alongside a musician or sound artist. I may not have always enjoyed the sound, or even all the words, but I’ve always found the shows enlightening, interesting, compelling and a great way to expand my aesthetic and meet fascinating people. I hope we can get back to live, in-person events soon. For now, Rebecca is going Online in the Meantime with Bad Mouth featuring some of the talented writers she knows. We’re excited to be able to share with you!
This week Rebecca writes:
Melanie Hatter is an award-winning author of two novels and one short story collection. Selected by Edwidge Danticat, Malawi’s Sisters won the inaugural Kimbilio National Fiction Prize, published by Four Way Books in 2019. The Color of My Soul won the 2011 Washington Writers’ Publishing House Fiction Prize, and Let No One Weep for Me, Stories of Love and Loss was released in 2015. Melanie received a 2019 Maryland State Arts Council grant for her writing. She is a participating author with the PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools program, and she served four years on the board of the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation.
Rebecca also reminds us that we can purchase Melanie Hatter’s book Malawi’s Sisters, directly from the publisher, Four Way Books, or from Melanie’s neighborhood bookstore, Loyalty Bookstore (black woman owned store)… and after hearing Melanie Hatter’s reading, we’re sure you’ll want to order your copy.
And we’ll be excited to see what Rebecca will be sharing next.
