Woz Flint is a writer, mama, and lover of green olives and toast. She has published pieces in places such as The Huffington Post, Brevity, and BUST Magazine. When she isn’t playing Nintendo with her 8-year-old son or binge watching episodes of This Is Us or Schitt’s Creek, you can find her at her kitchen table tapping away on her computer keyboard working on her latest WIP. She’s in love with the music of Over the Rhine and believes napping is a sport (and she’s gold level!). Woz lives in the Nob Hill area of Albuquerque, NM.
PLUME: When did you know you were a writer?
WOZ: It was pretty clear as a child that I was a writer. I declared it, however, after penning a poem about bubblegum and drew the accompanying gumball machine illustration when I was in kindergarten.
PLUME: Where do you get your ideas?
WOZ: I’m very much a “draw from your life” kind of writer. Even when I write fiction, it’s 9 times out of 10 still loosely based on real events.
PLUME: Where do you find support for your writing? A local community? An online community?
WOZ: Finding writing support has proven to be a wee bit tricky, but I’ve found it in an online group run by Jena Schwartz and I’m working with a book coach/editor for my current WIP. I also have a good friend (we’ve never met IRL!) in Canada who is my go-to gal for all things in the writing life realm.
PLUME: How do you define “success” for a writer? For yourself?
WOZ: This has changed many times throughout the years. For writers in general, I am of the school of thought that if you make time for your craft, you are indeed successful. For myself, I’m a bit more demanding! HA! For a long time, I believed I had to keep acquiring more by-lines to be successful, but now, I am confident that writing more than simply talking about writing is the road to my success.
PLUME: Do you have a writing shero? A fellow woman writer from whom you get inspiration and encouragement?
Oh, indeed, I do! This, too, has changed over the years but at the moment I am completely smitten with essayist Samantha Irby and every single sentence written by Dani Shapiro. (If you haven’t read Shapiro’s latest, Inheritance, run out and get a copy immediately. I promise you won’t be sorry!)
PLUME: What are you currently working on?
My latest project is a memoir about my very unconventional marriage and how my husband and I challenge the societal norm of what is accepted as the “proper” union.
